Jorge Mario Bergoglio, born in Buenos Aires on 17 December 1936; priestly ordination in the Company of Jesus on 13 December 1969; elected to the titular see of Auca on 20 May 1992 and consecrated on 27 June 1992; promoted archbishop coadjutor of Buenos Aires on 3 June 1997; succeeded as coadjutor on 28 February 1998. He was publicly created a cardinal in the Consistory of 21 February 2001; elected Pontiff on 13 March 2013 and solemnly initiated his Universal Pastoral Ministry of the Church on 19 March 2013.
