History

The relations between the Apostolic See of Rome and the Armenian nation and the Georgian nation are ancient. Modern day diplomatic relations with the State of Georgia and the State of the Republic of Armenia began with their proclamation of independence in 1991. The Holy See’s official recognition occurred on 23 May 1992. The Holy See was among the first states in the world to establish a permanent diplomatic mission in the South Caucasus. Pope John Paul II and Pope Francis rendered visits to the countries in the South Caucasus and over the years there have been numerous high level bilateral visits. The Holy See has not ceased to make its voice heard in international forums particularly in defending the principles of sovereignty, conflict resolution, peace, development, the promotion of human dignity, the respect for international order and Christian values.
